What is Gomoku?

Tic-tac-toe's grown-up cousin, played on a 15×15 board: place stones in turn, first to five in a row — horizontal, vertical or diagonal — wins. Simple to learn, endlessly sharp: open threes and double fours decide games in a handful of moves.

This is freestyle Gomoku (five OR MORE in a row wins, no tournament opening restrictions — the variant is labelled, because competitive Renju rules differ). The last stone stays highlighted, the winning five lights up, and the computer plays real threat-based strategy at three levels. Play solo, pass a device, or open a private online room.

How to play Gomoku

1. Pick a mode: 🤖 Computer, 👥 Same Device, or 🌎 Online Friend.
2. Black places first. Tap any empty intersection to place a stone.
3. Five (or more) in a row in any direction wins — the line lights up.
4. Watch for open threes and fours: they are one move from winning.
5. Rematch swaps colours.

Tips

• An open three (three in a row with both ends free) demands an answer — learn to spot them instantly.
• Build shapes that threaten two lines at once; single threats get blocked forever.
• Playing second, answer near the centre — distance concedes tempo.
