How to Run a Perfect Family Game Night (Step-by-Step)

The best family game nights are not the ones with the most games — they are the ones with a little structure. Here is the plan we use, which takes about ninety minutes and needs nothing but a phone (or a TV to mirror it to).

1. Make teams in ten seconds

Mixed-age teams are fairer and funnier than kids versus adults. Type everyone's names into the Team Generator and let it deal two or three teams. Re-shuffle until the youngest stops complaining.

2. Warm up with a quiz (10 minutes)

Start with something everyone can win: Kids Trivia for the little ones, General Knowledge for the grown-ups, one question per team. Put it in fullscreen on the TV and shout answers.

3. Charades (20 minutes)

Charades is the heart of any game night. Pick the Animals or Kids category for young children, Movies for teens and adults. The 60-second timer keeps turns short and the secret-word screen stops peeking.

4. Would You Rather break (10 minutes)

Everyone needs a sit-down. Would You Rather for Kids is the perfect breather: no winners, big laughs, and you learn that grandpa would rather have a pet dragon.

5. Pictionary (20 minutes)

Paper, pens and the Pictionary word generator. Easy words for kids, Medium for everyone else. Award two points for a guess inside 30 seconds.

6. The bomb round (10 minutes)

End with chaos: the Bomb Timer pass-the-phone game. Name a fruit, pass; name a country, pass; whoever is holding it when it explodes does a dare from the Dare Generator (Clean mode).

Keeping score

Open the Scoreboard on a second phone or tablet. It saves automatically, so the argument about who is winning is over before it starts. Crown the winning team with a compliment round — every player gets one — and finish while everyone still wants more.
