What is Chess?
Real chess with every real rule: legal moves only, check and checkmate, stalemate, castling both sides, en passant, pawn promotion with a choice of piece, and draws by the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition or insufficient material — the rules engine is the proven open-source chess.js library, so the game is exactly the chess you know.
Choose your table: play the computer at four honest levels (Beginner makes human mistakes; Hard thinks several moves deep — a solid casual-club opponent, not a grandmaster), hand one phone back and forth with a friend, or create a private online room and send the code, link or QR to someone in another city. Move history, captured pieces, legal-move hints and the last move highlighted — with an optional chess clock for local games.

How to play Chess
- Choose how to play: 🤖 Computer (pick a level), 👥 Same Device, or 🌎 Online Friend (create a room, share the code or QR).
- White moves first. Tap a piece to see its legal squares highlighted, then tap where to move.
- Special rules all work: castling, en passant, and pawn promotion (you choose the piece).
- Check is announced; get your king to safety. Checkmate ends the game — stalemate and the draw rules end it level.
- After the game: rematch with colours swapped, or study the move list.

Is this full, correct chess?
Yes. Moves are validated by chess.js, the widely used open-source rules engine: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate, stalemate, the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition and insufficient-material draws all work exactly as in over-the-board chess.
How strong is the computer?
Four levels that genuinely differ: Beginner (plays quickly and blunders like a new player), Easy, Medium and Hard, which searches several moves deep with a classical evaluation — a good challenge for casual players, honestly labelled: it is not a grandmaster engine.
How do I play with a friend far away?
Choose Online Friend → Create room. You get a short room code, a link and a QR — send any of them. When your friend opens it, the match starts live; if either of you refreshes, you reconnect to the same game.
Can two people play on one phone?
Yes — Same Device mode passes the turn back and forth, with the board optionally rotating to face whoever is moving.
