What is Name Place Animal Thing?

The paper-and-pen game every Indian child knows: someone picks a letter, everyone scribbles a Name, a Place, an Animal and a Thing starting with it, and the first to finish shouts “Stop!”. The phone takes over the boring parts — it picks a letter you have not had yet, runs a 60-second clock, and keeps a proper score sheet where a unique answer is 10, a shared answer is 5 and a blank is 0.

Add Movie and Food, or Colour and Country, for six or eight columns; skip Q, X, Y and Z for younger players; play three, five or ten rounds and let the phone crown the winner.

Name Place Animal Thing rules

Everyone rules a sheet into four columns: Name, Place, Animal, Thing. A letter is chosen — traditionally by someone reciting the alphabet silently until another player says “stop” — and everyone writes one word per column beginning with that letter. The first to finish shouts “Stop!” and pens go down. Answers are read out: 10 points for a correct word nobody else has, 5 if two or more players wrote the same word, 0 for blanks and wrong answers. Highest total after the agreed rounds wins.

Scoring and the usual arguments

  • Is a nickname a Name? Most families allow any real first name; brands and surnames are the host’s call.
  • Places: cities, countries, rivers and mountains all count; “my house” does not.
  • Things: anything you can touch. Abstract words (“thought”) are usually out.
  • Spelling: decide before the game. The score sheet lets you give 5 for a near miss.

More columns for older players

Six columns add Movie and Food; eight add Colour and Country. For a Bollywood night try Name, Place, Actor, Movie, Song, Food. Teachers use the classic four with a 90-second timer as a vocabulary drill.
