What is Word Chain?
Word Chain is the general-purpose word-chain game: every word starts with the last letter of the one before, against a timer, with lives, a valid/invalid tracker and three levels — Kids (25 seconds a turn, three lives, two-letter words allowed), Family (15 seconds, two lives, three letters or more) and Hard (10 seconds, one life, four letters or more). It works for one player practising vocabulary as well as ten players in a car.
Last Letter is the kids-only version of the same engine; Shiritori is the Japanese version with the “n” rule.
Word Chain rule sets
- Standard: any common English word, no proper nouns, no repeats
- Long words only: agree a five-letter minimum on top of the Hard level
- Category chain: the first word sets the category for the whole chain
- Vocabulary builder: solo, Hard level, write the chain down and look up the ones you were unsure of
- Spelling bee chain: the player must also spell the word
- Two-language chain: alternate English and your home language, chaining by sound
- Elimination: one life each, last player standing wins
- Speed chain: Hard level timer, whole class standing, sit when you fail
