Classroom Noise Meter: a Noise Level Monitor for the Board

A big friendly noise level for the board — A free classroom noise meter that uses the microphone: a big meter and face for the board, a too-loud line you set, an alarm when the room stays over it, and a quiet-streak challenge. No sign-up, nothing recorded.

What is Classroom Noise Meter?

Put this on the smartboard and the class can see its own volume: a ball that grows with the noise, a face that goes from happy to wincing, and a red line you set for “too loud”. Stay over the line for a couple of seconds and a short alarm sounds. The Quiet challenge mode counts how many seconds the room stays under the line and keeps the best streak, which turns silent reading into a team sport.

The level is relative to your device’s microphone (not real decibels), so set the line while the class is working at the volume you want. The sound never leaves the device: nothing is recorded or sent.

How to use a classroom noise meter well

A noise meter works when the class can see it and owns it. Put it on the board, set the too-loud line together at the start of a task (“this is our group-work volume”), and let the face do the nagging. The alarm plays only after the room has stayed over the line for a couple of seconds, so a single laugh does not set it off.

Quiet challenge

Switch to Quiet challenge for silent reading or tests: the counter shows how many seconds the room has stayed under the line and remembers the best streak. Classes compete with their own record, not with each other.

Setting the levels

The reading is relative to your device’s microphone, so use the sensitivity slider once: raise it until normal working noise sits around 40–50, then place the too-loud line at 60–70. A laptop on the desk and a phone on the board will read differently; set each once.

Privacy

The microphone feeds a live level meter and nothing else. No audio is recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and the microphone is released when you tap Stop.

How to play Classroom Noise Meter

  1. Tap Start listening and allow the microphone.
  2. Set the too-loud line just above the working volume you want.
  3. Leave it on the board — the face and colour change as the room gets louder; an alarm plays after a couple of seconds over the line.
  4. Quiet challenge counts the seconds under the line and keeps the best streak.

Classroom Noise Meter FAQ

Does the noise meter record anything?

No. The microphone feeds a live level meter in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded. Stop listening and the microphone is released.

Why does it say the microphone is blocked?

The browser needs permission: tap the padlock icon in the address bar, allow the microphone and tap Start again. Inside an embedded frame or the site preview the microphone is not available — open the page directly.

Is the reading in decibels?

No, it is a 0–100 level relative to your device and the sensitivity slider. It is consistent for one room and one device, which is what a classroom needs.

Is Classroom Noise Meter free?

Yes — 100% free with no account required.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, it is designed for phones first and works on tablets, laptops and TVs.
