What is White Elephant Gift Exchange?
A white elephant gift exchange (also called Dirty Santa or a Yankee swap) is a game where everyone brings one wrapped gift, players draw an order, and each person either opens a new gift or steals one that is already open. The fun is in the stealing, and the arguments are about the rules — so this tool runs them for you.
Add the names, pick how many times a gift can be stolen (three is classic), decide whether an immediate steal-back is allowed, and whether player one gets a final swap. The screen then tells each player what they may do and keeps the gift ledger.
White elephant rules
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget and adds it to the pile. Gifts are anonymous.
- Draw a random order (the tool does this when you add the names).
- Player 1 opens a gift from the pile.
- Each following player either opens a new gift or steals any opened gift. If your gift is stolen you immediately open a new one or steal a different one — not the gift just taken from you.
- A gift can be stolen a limited number of times (three is classic); after that it is frozen and stays with its owner.
- When everyone holds a gift, player 1 (who never had a chance to steal) may swap for any unfrozen gift. Then the exchange ends.
The tool on this page enforces all six, shows each player their options, keeps the gift ledger and has an Undo for the inevitable “wait, that’s not what happened”.

Variations: Dirty Santa, Yankee swap and more
Dirty Santa is the same game with a Southern US name and, usually, unlimited steals per turn but a three-steal limit per gift. Yankee swap often lets the stolen-from player take any gift, not just open a new one. Conspiracy Santa has the whole group buy one gift for one person. Set the steal limit to Unlimited and turn off the steal-back rule in the tool to play the rowdier versions.
