Where does freeze dance come from?
The game shares its DNA with the Victorian parlour favourites: musical chairs (stop and sit) and the older statues playground game, in which one player turns their back and the others must freeze whenever they turn round. Freeze dance simply swaps the turning player for a pause in the music. It has no recorded inventor; it exists wherever there is a gramophone, a radio or a phone and a room full of children. Because nobody needs chairs and nobody needs to read, it is often the first party game a child ever plays.

How to play
- Everyone spreads out with room to move.
- Start the music — dance however you like.
- When the music stops, freeze in exactly the position you are in.
- The judge looks for movement: a swaying arm, a shuffling foot, a giggle. Anyone caught is out.
- Restart the music. The last dancer standing wins.
