A potato, a circle of people and a clock nobody can see. Hot potato is the party game of pure panic — and one of the few that works equally well for five-year-olds and office teams.
Where does hot potato come from?
The origins are murky, but the oldest documented version is much more dramatic than a potato. Sidney Oldall Addy's Glossary of Sheffield Words (1888) describes a game in which a lit candle was passed round a circle of seated players who chanted "Jack's alive, and likely to live; if he dies in your hand, you've a forfeit to give." Whoever was holding the candle when it went out paid the forfeit. Swap the candle for a potato and the guttering flame for music, and you have the game children play today. Manufactured versions with wind-up timers reached toy-shop shelves in the 1950s, and the phrase "hot potato" for a problem nobody wants to hold comes from the same idea.

- A soft object to pass.

- A circle of three or more players.
How to play hot potato
- Sit or stand in a circle and hand the potato to one player.
- Start the music or the timer.
- Pass the potato to the next player as fast as you can. Passing back is not allowed; throwing across the circle is not allowed.
- When the music stops or the timer explodes, whoever is holding the potato is out — or does a forfeit in penalty mode.
- Play until one player remains.
Variations
- Penalty potato — nobody sits out; the holder does a quick dare.
- Two potatoes — travelling in opposite directions. Chaos.
- Question potato — you may only pass after answering a question ("name a fruit").
- Water balloon potato — outdoors, in summer, with towels ready.
Tips for hosts
- Stand up for faster rounds; sit down for toddlers.
- Vary the round length so nobody can count seconds.
- Have the eliminated players control the timer or judge illegal passes.
- For big groups, run two circles and a final.
