What is Flag Quiz?

The flag quiz shows a flag as an emoji and four country names; pick the right one. Thirty flags are in the bank, ten per round, drawn at random, so the second round is a different test from the first. It is the quiz people play on a bus, in the five minutes before a lesson, or as the opening round of a pub-style quiz night at home.

Because the flags are emojis, they look crisp on every phone and the quiz loads in a second. The Geography Quiz is the companion for capitals, rivers and mountains; the Random Country Generator is the no-score version for drilling.

How to learn the hard flags

The ones everyone confuses, and the trick that separates them.

  • Australia vs New Zealand: Australia has six white stars (one large, seven-pointed); New Zealand has four red stars with white borders
  • Indonesia vs Monaco vs Poland: Indonesia and Monaco are red over white (Monaco is squarer); Poland is white over red
  • Ireland vs Côte d’Ivoire: Ireland is green at the hoist, orange at the fly; Côte d’Ivoire is the reverse
  • Norway vs Iceland: Norway is red with a blue cross; Iceland is blue with a red cross
  • Chad vs Romania: almost identical — Chad’s blue is darker; on emoji they are indistinguishable, so quizzes avoid pairing them
  • Netherlands vs Luxembourg: Luxembourg’s blue is lighter and the flag is longer
  • Italy vs Mexico: Mexico carries the eagle-and-snake emblem in the centre
  • Nordic crosses: the cross is always offset towards the hoist, never centred

Tips

  • Play with the 15-second timer once you know the easy thirty; it stops you from guessing by elimination.
  • Pass the phone for a group round — one flag each, loser does the next spin of the Chore Wheel.
  • Say the capital as well as the country to turn it into a two-point question.
  • Pass the phone and play "one question each" for a group round.
  • Use the Scoreboard tool for team tournaments across several quizzes.

Flag Quiz FAQ

How many flags are in the flag quiz?

Thirty, from every continent, with four choices per question and ten questions per round. Rounds draw at random, so you will see them all over three or four rounds.

Why are some countries missing?

The bank is limited to flags that are distinct as emojis. Near-identical pairs such as Chad and Romania are left out on purpose, because a quiz where the right answer cannot be seen is not a fair quiz.

Is it suitable for school?

Yes — it is a quick geography starter for ages eight and up and plays on an interactive board in fullscreen.

How many questions does the Flag Quiz have?

Every round draws 10 questions at random from a much larger themed bank, so you can replay for a different set.

How many questions are in Flag Quiz?

Each round has 10 questions drawn from a larger bank, so replays give different questions.

Is there a timer?

Optional — switch on the 15-second timer for a faster, more competitive round.
